SW SCORE: 30

I know I bumped it up to 3.5. Some things you just can’t quantify. This is the very definition of a cult classic. The movie starts with super fun credits and rolls right into a tongue-in-cheek voiceover that sets us up in a Mad Max type dystopia except no one and nothing is serious. The aesthetic is as if Pee Wee Herman, Dune, and Mad Max were somehow combined together. As if that wasn’t amusing or fun enough, comic book panels are inter-spliced throughout the live action shots. I wonder if Ang Lee was a fan of this because he is the only Marvel comic book movie to use a similar touch in his flick, Hulk (2003).  It’s also highly amusing to me that a serious musician like Bjork did the soundtrack for this very silly movie. I like the juxtaposition.  The actors hammed it up, as they should have. Naomi Watts plays a nerd, which is not her usual deal. She’s usually a burning, living embodiment of torn emotions and/or sultriness. Lori Petty was a silly wunderkind of energy that was the living, breathing human form of the silly tone. She did great comic work in Orange is the New Black. Check that out. Malcolm McDowell, who appears to have been age 70 since the 1990s, which is both weird and good? I dunno. But he plays a villain like almost nobody else. His voice drips with ill intent and his face just screams megalomania. But in a good way! It’s all a big, stupid, fun, campy blast. I have a couple quibbles and I was gonna write them but, you know what, they don’t really matter. It’s all good fun.

(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.

(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)

(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so

(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
