I loved the first installment on this franchise. I’m a sucker for a good revenge flick. It’s a simple formula: hero is wronged by bad guy, usually involving the hero’s innocent family. Hero then kicks ass/kills everybody involved. See Equalizer. See Taken. See Rambo. See John Wick. See the Bourne franchise. See Ransom. See etc etc etc.

I had a blast watching this movie. i didn’t want it to end. It ends pretty cynically which is a running theme in this franchise but like the first it is anchored by Benicio del Toro’s brooding relentlessness. He’s joined this time by the perfect Emily Blunt (I’m a pretty big fan) as the idealistic teammate (read sidekick) to del Toro. Josh Brolin adds his usual steely presence.

In the first movie, del Toro’s character is shown to be an anti-hero at best. I won’t say why but he’s got more than edge and does something I haven’t seen any other “hero” of a mainstream film do before. He doesn’t go as dark here but he is still ruthless.

There’s not much else to say. It’s a great time. Just enjoy it for what it is: a bloody action blast. I recommend you check your brain and higher morality at the door.

(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.

(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)

(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so

(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
