(If you’re curious, my review process. It’s also pasted at the end of this post. I don’t believe in Rotten Tomatoes. I just believe in me.)
(***all-purpose SPOILER ALERT*** there may be some in this review)
SW SCORE: 31
3 out of 5 🐙
The opening scene with Denzel dressed in religious garb on a train that feels like it’s running through a developing country is not what I expected from another entry in the “Taken” genre (revenge action flicks starring serious middle-aged actors). The fact that Denzel’s kill target doesn’t try to run away from him made me think about Lady Olenna Tyrell staring down Jamie Lannister, completely cool and unafraid of her certain death.
There’s nothing remarkable in this revenge flick. It moves along reasonably well. I was invested and I wanted to see Denzel kill all the evil guys who killed his friend. But I guess I grew up on too many action films and a film has to do something different or special to raise my eyebrow.
The only thing that stood out for me was the detective work. I love a good detective hunt. I love when a mystery is dissembled by a relentless investigator. I love the building of the reveal with the series of clues. This film did that well.
It’s a shame because the first installment felt fresh.
(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.
(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)
(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so
(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
