(If you’re curious, my review process. It’s also pasted at the end of this post. I don’t believe in Rotten Tomatoes. I just believe in me.)
(***all-purpose SPOILER ALERT*** there may be some in this review)
SW SCORE: 37
3.7 out of 5
Stardate: 1/30/2020 (that’s when I saw this joint)
The movie is an Israeli-German collaboration. While I have seen multiple German films, I have never seen an Israeli film so I was excited to do so especially since the film was partially shot in Israel.
I was expecting the film to be in Hebrew or German but it is in both and English is used as the bridge between characters when they are speaking with each other and for the subtitles.
I can’t entirely remember the precise plot of Chocolat but I recall it has something to do with love being partially won through amazing food. Similarly, The Cakemaker is the story of a baker who falls in love with a man in a heterosexual marriage.
I love that Ofir Raul Grazier, who wrote and directed, does not spell out the sexuality of the characters. 70 minutes go by without a spoken word of it and there is no need to say it. He does not tell. He shows. This is not as common as you think. Giving credit to the audience’s intelligence is also not ubiquitous. It’s a complex love triangle the likes of which I have not seen before but it is excellent to see representation of LGBTQ characters.
The husband is killed early on and the baker journeys to Israel to find out more about his deceased lover. He meets his widow there and their relationship evolves dramatically. The baker never revealing his connection to the widow as he gets more deeply involved with her. In a lovely reveal, she finally discovers the baker’s true connection. it is a beautiful and haunting moment.
(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.
(2) Octopuses (0-5 , with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)
(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so
(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
