(If you’re curious, my review process. It’s also pasted at the end of this post. I don’t believe in Rotten Tomatoes. I just believe in me.)
(***all-purpose SPOILER ALERT*** there may be some in this review)
SW SCORE: 43
4.5 out of 5 🐙
How do you follow what many critics have anointed as the best Pixar movie ever? How do you follow a superhero movie that went where few if any superhero movies had gone before and in a nearly flawless manner? How do you follow a movie that was immediately followed by insatiable anticipation as soon as it left the theaters?
You start where it left off, of course.
The super sequel is another pretty much pitch perfect Pixar examination of the superhero movie genre with a postmodern twist. I realize I didn’t give it a perfect 50 score but that’s not because it is lacking. It’s just that I’m an inconsistent weirdo. But I suppose the stay-at-home Dad angle wasn’t as creative as I usually expect from Pixar. But it still pulled it off with no meaningful slips. And the baddie, in typical desk light style, was a mix of megalomania and timely social commentary.
Maybe I didn’t rank it as high as its predecessor because few movies ever match the first of a franchise. There are the proverbial exceptions that prove the proverbial rule (The Empire Strikes Back, Spider-Man 2, The Godfather: Part II, to name a few prominent ones) but you never really recover from your first love, do you? You might have greater loves. But it will never be the same as the first time a world is unfurled in front of your eyes and makes you see an old story in a blinding new light. In the shadow of that supernova, Incredibles 2 is dimmed a bit but it’s still a giant standing on its own two feet.
Pixar feels level (0 being no tears, 10 being waterfall): 2 – There were a couple of tender moments but this isn’t really a tearful film. Or maybe I’m just dead inside. That’s not a criticism of the film. It’s just not one of the emotions that this excellent epic rips from your soul.
(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.
(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)
(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so
(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
