(If you’re curious, my review process. It’s also pasted at the end of this post. I don’t believe in Rotten Tomatoes. I just believe in me.)
(***all-purpose SPOILER ALERT*** there may be some in this review)
SW SCORE: 46
4.6 out of 5 🐙
One of Pixar’s finest films and that’s a VERY high bar. If you haven’t seen it, I would recommend you skip the first ten minutes unless you love getting your heartbroken. It’s a charming, stunning looking, heartwarming, joyous, generously funny, and beautifully paced movie. In other words, a Pixar joint.
It’s a tale as old as time: a grumpy older person gets forced to spend time with a child and this interaction changes them both forever. But, again, Pixar makes this well-loved dynamic its own. The first part of the film is a silent montage that will absolutely devastate you if there is any kind of humanity left in your soul. The rest of the film seems to know about the sadness bomb dropped at the beginning and turns itself into a rollicking buddy adventure movie. There is another moment that is brutally sad as well but all of it comes together in a relatively predictable happy ending but that doesn’t matter. The journey was so vibrant and funny and exquisitely animated that we can forgive Pixar for utilizing a common characterization pairing.
Feels level (0 being no tears, 10 being waterfall): 7 – The opening montage is soul scorchingly sad. And the realization of a promise kept to the love of his life gets the tears flowing freely again.
Review process: (this is always evolving, I’m sad to say. I’m more of a watcher who makes mostly unhelpful observations about things I have absorbed. I am not unlike a pop culture blob.)
Two scores are assigned: (I don’t believe in Rotten Tomatoes. I just believe in me)
(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.
(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)
(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so
(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
