3.1 out of 5 🐙

I expected to really dislike this movie. But despite the tired plot (which they manage to reveal in almost its entirety in the trailers) and the less than edgy patter, it was ok fun. Kumail Nanjiani injected the most comic relief but the whole movie maintained the overall light feel of the franchise. Emma Thompson was great but it kinda felt that she only used like 4% of her powers to do this role. But 4% of ET is more than most actors will ever reach. Tessa Thompson (no relation) and Chris Hemsworth have pretty good buddy chemistry. They don’t have brilliantly vibrant dialogue to work with but they’re not top tier buddies. Overall, it’s a perfectly cromulent two hours of sci-fi /action comedy. And that’s a lot more than I was hoping for.

(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.

(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)

(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so

(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
