Monkeybone (2001) (mini-review++)

0.5 out of 5 🐙

I’m trying to think of something good to say. Most of the cast went on to do amazing things or had already done amazing things. At one point, Chris Kattan was playing a recently resurrected corpse and was throwing his body parts at Brendan Fraser’s character who was at that point possessed by a cartoon monkey. That sounds great in and of itself but the moment was a few seconds long and it is not in any way enough to balance out the relentless terribleness that is this movie. Another way to look at this movie is if you took all the joy and quality out of Who Framed Roger Rabbit and then tried to slap on the ripped off aesthetic from The Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice.

(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.

(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)

(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so

(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
