(If you’re curious, my review process. It’s also pasted at the end of this post. I don’t believe in Rotten Tomatoes. I just believe in me.)
(***all-purpose SPOILER ALERT*** there may be some in this review)
SW SCORE: 17
1.5 out of 5 🐙
This movie is set in the USA but every single character, not ALL of which are supposed to be foreign-born, has a foreign accent. And it’s clear it’s a Hispanic foreign accent and since the movie is made/funded by an Argentine company I assume it’s Argentine voice talent. I’m a Hispanic immigrant myself so I have no issue with accents (Latinx or otherwise) per se but if you’re placing a movie in the states, maybe spend a little extra for unaccented voice talent? For at least maybe ONE character? I gather this is supposed to be some sort of satire of the toxic masculinity hardscrabble private investigator. And I’m no easily triggered millenial. But the misogynist and classist jokes are terrible. Forget that they are callous. I don’t care about that. But they aren’t even remotely funny. And maybe on top of that, it’s supposed to be a further satire on the modern-day prevalence of the anti-hero archetype. But other than killing for killing’s sake (including a dog, random kids, an old lady for no good reason), there doesn’t seem to be any meaning at all behind the mayhem. Maybe that’s what the director is going for: a meaningless bloodbath full of satirically (?) terrible cliched dialogue. The animation was ok initially but it only takes about ten minutes to see it is as low budget as the money spent on the script. I don’t know. Maybe I’m being this rarified ironic social commentary is just flying over my head. Even if it is, I can’t grace this movie with any kind of strong praise.
(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.
(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)
(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so
(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
