Clearly, I am not seeing what most critics and viewers are seeing here. For me, this was a painful experience. The scenes were far too long. The movie was far too long. I understand this is a story about the painful dissolution of a marriage. But in Kramer vs. Kramer, the movie this has been compared to by some, had strong pacing, crisp dialogue, and many joyful moments. The only joyful moment for me with this film was when it ended. It’s shocking to me because I loved Mistress America, another film directed and co-written by Noah Baumbach (and Greta Gerwig). And I thought it was absolutely hilarious and nuanced and wonderful. It was a movie filled with joy. Maybe he wanted to do a photo negative of Mistress America. In that sense, he certainly succeeded.

(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.

(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)

(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so

(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
