SW SCORE: 43

4.5 out of 5 🐙

Only Taika Waititi could make a comedy about Hitler in today’s woke era. And alt-right folks: I’m happy we are in a woke era so don’t think I’m on your team. Yes, I know Charlie Chaplin did some. But I’ve watched a lot of silent films and they just don’t resonate with me. It’s probably a personal failing. But I loved this film. The actors were all superb. I think this is ScarJo’s finest performance this year, not Marriage Story. She was the best a mother could be in the most trying circumstances. The kids were sublime and the tone was typical Waititi: light but nuanced and sweet and peppered with serious, truthful, horrible moments. It’s a singular vibe that no working directors really can mimic.

(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.

(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)

(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so

(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
