SW SCORE: 37
3.7 out of 5 🐙
I’m of the opinion that Superman movies are usually terrible because Superman is not relatable. He’s too powerful and too nice and too wholesome. As far as I’m concerned, there are only two good Superman movies. Richard Donner’s Superman and Superman II. Of course, Richard Donner helped direct this one, too, though he wasn’t credited. And Mario Puzo wrote the story and shared screenwriting credit! How weird is that? The rest failed attempts by some skilled and some unskilled directors. I think it all comes back to the character himself like I was ranting before. But Superman II is my favorite. I love General Zod. Terrence Stamp is born to play a villain. Few do it better. Gene Hackman was decent comic relief. And no actor has come close to Christopher Reeve’s interpretation of Jerry Seinfeld’s favorite hero. I like the twist. Though it feels like a bit of a cheat. In essence, General Zod and his two buddies are equal to Superman in power. And I’m no math wizard but 3 always beats 1. Sure, you could say the son of Jor-El has intangibles that need to be included in any fight calculation. Maybe that could give him enough to take out two of his equals. But three? Let’s just say they had to do a twist because internal comic logic just doesn’t allow for Superman to win. But then again, comics violate their internal logic ALL THE TIME. Anyway, it’s still a fun flick. It’s the best Man of Steel joint ever. Though that’s not a very high bar.
(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.
(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)
(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so
(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
