3.6 out of 5 🐙

I think the acting in this movie is a 7 overall. If it was just Heath Ledger as the Joker for 2 and a half hours, I would give it a ten. He was, until Joaquin Phoenix took the championship belt this year, the best Joker ever. Every scene he was in was his and his alone, regardless of what other fine actors were in the scene with him. If Heath Ledger had an entire origin movie for the Joker, it would be a tie. But Joaquin Phoenix had the screentime to become more than just a compelling adversary. But the rest of the movie left me cold. Sure, it was put together from excellent parts. Everything was done very well. But it was 40 minutes too long. And while I’ve loved Maggie Gyllenhaal in other roles, she made me miss Katie Holmes and that is not a good thing. I can’t give you a nuanced, smart explanation for why I feel this way. In the end, this feels like a movie that was less than the sum of its parts.

(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.

(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)

(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so

(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
