(If you’re curious, my review process. It’s also pasted at the end of this post. I don’t believe in Rotten Tomatoes. I just believe in me.)
(***all-purpose SPOILER ALERT*** there may be some in this review)
SW SCORE: 37
3.7 out of 5 🐙
Cuba Gooding Jr. deservedly won an Oscar for his million mile per hour turn as a maddening star athlete. I don’t know if it was bad representation or bad choices or bad luck or some perfect storm of all three. But his career was just terrible after this film. Yes, he was good in As Good As It Gets and American Crime Story. But the rest of the roles are a nightmare pageant. It’s a real shame because he’s obviously supremely talented. But he had charisma for eons in this movie. He stole every scene he was in. And that’s saying something because Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger were excellent. Oh, and Bonnie Hunt was the 2nd best scene-stealer in the movie. She is so damn charming. Cameron Crowe’s steady hand and sharp dialogue pulled it all together to deliver an underrated dramedy classic.
(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.
(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)
(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so
(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
