I don’t know how many of you have seen Soul Man. It’s a terrible movie about a white guy who essentially uses this pill or something like that to have convincing “blackface” and, well, black skin. He does this so he can get the scholarship reserved for black people. It gets worse but I don’t want to spoil it for you. Tootsie’s premise is really not that different. A male actor can’t get a role so he dresses up as a woman and gets the role obviously depriving a woman actor of the role. It’s a pretty shady and unethical premise. And I really can’t defend it. But despite all that, it’s a great movie. Dustin Hoffman is sublime. Jessica Lange may be better. And Teri Garr is wonderful. The plot goes where you think it might but the actors and the dialogue and Sydney Pollack’s deft direction make the ride hilarious, heartfelt, and riveting.

(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.

(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)

(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so

(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
