(***all-purpose SPOILER ALERT*** there may be some in this review)
The Queen (2006)
SW SCORE: 38
3.8 out of 5 🐙
Helen Mirren is an acting god here on earth and we should all bow down to her. When Princess Diana died, a lot of people cite it as a moment where everyone knew where they were. The same was said about 9/11. The same was said about the day when Barack Obama was first elected. But as much as I remember that day, it was 1000 times as strong for British people (mostly the English but even the anti-monarchy segments of the UK wouldn’t wish for Diana’s fate). This movie really captures the maelstrom that Diana’s death caused and the subsequent nuclear explosion caused by the Queen’s perceived arrogant slight (which is exactly what it was) regarding Diana’s funeral proceedings. At one point, 25% of the English, who love their queen, were in favor of abolishing the monarchy because of their anger towards the queen. Mirren plays the chastised monarch to perfection.
Review process: (this is always evolving, I’m sad to say. I’m more of a watcher who makes mostly unhelpful observations about things I have absorbed. I am not unlike a pop culture blob.)
Two scores are assigned: (I don’t believe in Rotten Tomatoes. I just believe in me)
(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.
(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)
(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so
(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
