(If you’re curious, my review process. It’s also pasted at the end of this post. I don’t believe in Rotten Tomatoes. I just believe in me.)
(***all-purpose SPOILER ALERT*** there may be some in this review)
SW score: 37
4 out of 5 octopi
Most critics hated on this movie. Its rotten tomatoes. com percentage is 27% and it was a box office disappointment. Because of this, I took forever to get around to watching it. But it just goes to show: I don’t have good taste in movies and I really should never look at any review or even glance at the RT percentage before I see a movie.
I get that RT can save you some money by scaring you away from a terrible movie. But what if that terrible movie speaks to you? Granted it probably won’t. But in the case of Suicide Squad, a “terrible” movie in the critics’ (and most fans’) eyes, spoke to me. It entertained the hell out of me.
Margot Robbie is just amazing. I love her. Go see I, Tonya. Go see anything she is in. She is gorgeous, funny, charming, adorable, unhinged, menacing and perfect in every way as Harley Quinn in this movie. I was never even interested in reading the Harley Quinn trades until seeing her in this movie. She is magic. Amazing, sexy, fierce magic.
Jared Leto’s Joker, on the other hand, is terrible. I’m not sure if his or Jack Nicholson’s Joker is worse. Every scene he is in is like a giant turd floating in an otherwise clean pool.
They didn’t need to go with a godlike enemy. A Lex Luthor or Kingpin (I know he’s Marvel) with like an ironic indentured team of superheroes, would have been sufficient and fun.
But other than that, the dialogue was more than fun enough for an entertaining team-up. And, again, Margot Robbie just lit up the screen in every scene she graced with her otherworldly presence.
(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.
(2) Octopuses (0-5 🐙, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)
(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feeling…not that SW score is scientific…but this one is even less so
(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
