Little Miss Sunshine (mini-review++)

little

(If you’re curious, my review process. It’s also pasted at the end of this post. I don’t believe in Rotten Tomatoes. I just believe in me.)

(***all-purpose SPOILER ALERT*** there may be some in this review)

The mini-review:

Little Miss Sunshine

acting 7

directing 7

writing 7

effects 7

editing 7

SW score: 35

3.5 out of 5 octopi

++ Although this was an Indie darling, it was a pretty traditional plot. An unhappy family starts at each other’s throats and comes together to achieve a common goal. It’s Ensemble Cast Movie 101. Again, there are only so many stories and paradigms and all that really matters is the details. God is in them, remember? Broad analysis aside, the actors all acquited themselves well. Steve Carrell took on his first dramatic role, surprising me at the time. Though it’s an established career arc for comedic actors to go from laughs to more (see Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey). Alan Arkin and Toni Collette are always luminescent on the screen and this joint is no exception. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris keep this dramady road movie moving along at an absorbing clip. It’s a little movie. But there is, forgive me, a lot of sunshine to enjoy.

(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.

(2) Octopuses (0-5 šŸ™, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)

(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feelingā€¦not that SW score is scientificā€¦but this one is even less so

(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
