The Fisher King (1991) (mini-review++)

(If you’re curious, my review process. It’s also pasted at the end of this post. I don’t believe in Rotten Tomatoes. I just believe in me.)

(***all-purpose SPOILER ALERT*** there may be some in this review)

The mini-review:

The Fisher King

acting 7

directing 7

writing 8

effects 6

editing 6

SW score: 34

3.2 out of 5 octopi

++ This is another Hollywood special: “crazy” person helps save a “sane” person. Sure, I’m simplifying but filmmakers love to cast the mentally ill as innocent truth-tellers. I’m not entirely against it but it would be fine to have a mentally ill person be just a normal person and not some uber-wise redemptive spirit. The film itself is a typically grey and weird and sometimes hard to watch terry Gilliam joint. Things are messy throughout and it’s not clear that they are any cleaner by the end of the movie. But that’s ok. There is some fanciful dialogue in this film and Robin Williams delivers most of it. This role harnesses his unmatched reservoir of hyper energy. There are few who could play this role.

(1) Shark Wrighter (SW) Score: Based on a sum of 5 sub-scores (acting, directing, writing/story, effects: cinematography &/or animation &/or effects, editing) with 1 being terrible and 10 being terrific.

(2) Octopuses (0-5 šŸ™, with 5 being fantastic and 0 being feces)

(3) Octopuses are my unquantifiable feelingā€¦not that SW score is scientificā€¦but this one is even less so

(4) ++ This optional section includes any incredibly *brilliant observations that don’t fit into simple quantitative slices like the scores and octopuses *(they are likely NOT brilliant)
