I was well into writing this strained and indulgent (my signature style) screed on why I left Facebook yesterday (on its 15th anniversary – yay unintended coincidences!).
Then it hit me. Even after I chose to no longer use my time or energy on Facebook I was USING MY TIME AND ENERGY talking about why I left Facebook.
It reminded me of one of the final scenes from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The good guys (Kirk and Spock et al.) have kicked the bad guy’s (Khan) butt and are about to take off, victorious, into the sunset. But Khan fires off this last gasp salvo at the good guys. And as is his wont, he quotes Moby Dick as he does it:
Now… Now… You can’t get away… From Hell’s heart, I stab at thee! For hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee…
But I got away.
Facebook lived in my head for a decade and knows all the cheat codes to my neuroses. As the lights in its corner of my mind were flickering off, it tried one last time to steal some of my quality time.
Nice try, though. Respect.
How do you LIKE me now?
